Philadelphia has always felt like it got eclipsed by New York, and I'm sure that Wilmington must feel eclipsed by Philadelphia and so on down the food chain. But here in Philadelphia, where so much is going on lately, we are finally getting some of the word out to the world. Here's a sample In the New York Times yesterday:

Sure thing, I'm always glad to add to the conversation. It is very exciting to see emerging arts organizations developing and thriving in the regional cities of Philadelphia, Wilmington, and Baltimore. It seems that the connections are beginning and neighboring cities can begin to collaborate in efforts to bring arts and culture to the region.

Thanks for the link Libby.

Here's some additional information about NWAA:

New Wilmington Art Association presents an alternative to the artwork typically associated with the greater Brandywine Valley through its creative interventions staged in the City’s Downtown.

Mission Statement
New Wilmington Art Association is an artist collective that works to support the careers of its member artists through monthly exhibitions, performances, lectures, and related programming.

Vision Statement
As the NWAA pursues 501(c) (3) charitable nonprofit status, it will support its member artists through the organization and promotion of exhibitions in alternative spaces throughout the city of Wilmington. Through our programming new audiences will gather around the empty storefronts, retail, and residential spaces of downtown. Ultimately a building will be acquired, and NWAA will oversee the creation of affordable studio spaces. Through this community a new culture of artists will emerge and take advantage of the city's strategic location among the markets of Baltimore, New York, Philadelphia, and Washington D.C

It is great to see that UD is beginning to make an impact in a growing contemporary and critical art scene that is developing in Philadelphia. Crane Arts Building being one of those spaces, plus it is so close to Delaware. As a former student of Lance Winn and the UD MFA program myself, it is fantastic to see the collaborative dialog beginning between Philadelphia and Delaware.

One more thing: Here's a wilmington gallery-hosted artblog worth checking out. Michael Kalmbach, who keeps the place and the blog running, http://newwilmingtonart.blogspot.com/, is a recent UD MFA.

Hi, Anon., This is a program that has found a way to insert itself into the mainstream of contemporary and the real world. That's no small feat, especially given the size and location and history of the program. Good luck with your grad school apps.

Hi, Michael, one of the hallmarks of a program doing a great job is that it enables each student to develop and realize work that is unique to them. I always feel I get that out of Tyler, and I got that out of the UD exhibit. In a more offbeat location, this year's Clay Studio students' show also has that quality. I don't know who's doing the teaching there, but kudos to them. What a range of work!!!
Anyway, the sense I got from Lance is that he totally gets how to run a program, and I'm just bowled over by how this program has transformed itself in the past few years, taking risks and reaching out, providing students with a mix of intellectual and practical skills, including how to put on a show! Lance is quite modest, and was sure to share whatever the program was doing with the other faculty. It was never about him when he talked about Delaware! That in and of itself is noteworthy, and reflects what I took to be a collaborative approach to coordinating the program. Just as that style encourages students, it encourages faculty to share their ideas, and makes for a better program.

Lance was a tireless advisor, with a unique gift of being able to frame the potential importance of anything I'd ask him to look at-- his curiosity was infectious. Ask anyone who has been through the UD program, and they'll tell you that Lance had a major impact on their practice.
