I think he missed the whole meaning of the painting. The original is such an emotional piece full of sorrow, desperation and hope at the same time. All figures have a story- a meaning... they are not just bodies arranged in certain positions. They all have dramatic movements and expressions. Each one tells a story. I find the photograph very superficial and pointless.

I knew I had seen this work before--it was in the Quebec Triennial! Thanks for reminding me, Stefan. I love the idea of the re-enactment of Gericault's re-enactment. And I love the idea of tableaux vivants where you see the models moving and understand the difficulty of performing for the artist/public. Re-enactments are in the air--although I guess they've always been around the edges of the scene. Ann Marie Lequesne's re-enactment of the assassination of Emperor Maximillian differs from the norm....she didn't use costumes or sets and when she re-enacted it in Philly she photographed the event on the steps of the Philadelphia Museum of Art!
