This week’s Weekly has my editor’s pick for Art Glut, an apartment show opening Friday and running only through Sunday. Below’s the copy. Photos at flickr.
Alex Gartelmann opens My House Gallery this weekend in his South Philly row house.
Every season brings another DIY gallery or alternative space with youthful energy and optimism to burn. This month the sweetly named My House Gallery opens with a show of more than 49 artists in the first floor of Alex Gartelmann’s South Philadelphia house. Gartelmann—23, and a 2007 UArts graduate—is as ambitious as he is idealistic. “The reason I started it is that as many opportunities as there are, there aren’t enough,” he says.
“People are getting discouraged. People go to art school and they have something to say and they should be able to say it.” Although much of the work in “Art Glut” will be small, Gartelmann says artist Matt Neff will have an 8-by-6-foot Egyptian warship that’ll be the first thing you see when you walk in. Gartelmann is already planning his next two shows: a 24-hour collaborative drawing marathon and a collaborative problem-solving exercise.
