"The Female Gaze" at PAFA. — “The Female Gaze” at PAFA.

Controversy regarding NYTimes critic Ken Johnson’s recent reviews of “Now Dig This! Art & Black Los Angeles 1960-1980” at MoMA PS1 and “The Female Gaze” at PAFA, in which he questioned the value of art by women and people of color, has culminated in a petition, signed by over 1,600 people, including artists Kara Walker, Glenn Ligon, Coco Fusco, Paul Ramirez Jonas, Janine Antoni, Louise Lawler, Julie Mehretu, Emily Roysdon, Clifford Owens, Lucy Raven, Lorraine O’Grady and Martha Rosler, art historians Rosalyn Deutsche, Miwon Kwon, and Robert Storr, as well as curators Chon Noriega, Brooke Davis Anderson and Dan Cameron. The petition states, essentially, that his review does not meet the Times’ editorial and professional standards and that the troubling issues it raises should be addressed by the paper.

3 from CFEVA – The Center for Emerging Visual Artists is currently offering three fellowships – the New Courtland Artist Fellowship, the Celebration of Art and Life, and a Visual Artist Fellowship. 1. the NewCourtland Artist Fellowship is a community-based initiative for artists to bring together seniors and school-age children throughout Philadelphia with intergenerational art-making projects. To apply, artists must design a project; once selected, artists lead ten 1.5 hour workshops, attend several preliminary and post-workshop meetings, one sensitivity training session, and participate in the Art is Ageless exhibition in Spring 2014. Artists will also be separately compensated for purchasing all necessary art supplies and professionally presenting the artwork created in their program for the final exhibition. The Celebration of Art and Life Fellowship, offered in partnership with Penn Medicine, invites faculty, staff, students and patients to participate in an exhibition in The Perelman Center for Advanced Medicine, to run from January 2013 through January 2014. The juried art exhibition is dedicated to the memory of Bernett L. Johnson, Jr., M.D., former Chief Medical Officer of the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania. The deadline is December 30, 2012. 3. The Visual Artist Fellowship, a two year program that includes a stipend, provides career support to regional artists to develop new levels of artistic and professional ability. Artists will be asked to demonstrate a vision for the next level of their professional or artistic practice and a clear plan for CFEVA’s proposed role in reaching it. Awards are based on the merit of the artwork, proven track record in project completion, vision for the next level in their career and the ability of CFEVA to help them achieve their goals. All artists are invited to apply, from emerging and mid career to established. The deadline is January 15, 2013. www.studioincamminati — “Korean Child’s Kimono,” new work by Incamminati artist Natalie Italiano.

The artists of Studio Incamminati are participating in a huge group show at the National Arts Club for their tenth anniversary. Featured are 28 artists and over 50 works of art from accomplished artists, including Founders Nelson and Leona Shanks. The opening reception is on Thursday, January 3, from 6–8 P.M. The exhibit continues January 4–15, 2013, Monday–Friday 10 A.M.–5 P.M. The National Arts Club is located at 15 Gramercy Park South, New York, NY; there is an accompanying Studio Incamminati artists demonstration there on Friday evening, January 11, from 6–9:30 P.M.
