We’re not at the finish line yet, but this is turning out to be a banner year for visual arts in the Knight Arts Challenge: of the 69 finalists, you’ll find included InLiquid, Philadelphia Sculptors, David Guinn, BAJ Design, Theresa Rose, Vox Populi and Grizzly Grizzly. The full list includes many more of our fav. Good on all of you! The full list of finalists, selected from over 1,200 applicants and their project ideas, is available online at the Knight Foundation. 

The Arts & Business Council wants to enlist you in determining the award recipients for the A&BC Awards Celebration 2013 on May 8.If you know of someone who should be honored for being a powerhouse in the creative sector, nominate them online.

Opportunities

 

Highwire Gallery is calling for submissions for a show running from February 1 – 24. Up to three artworks per artist are welcomes, with $20/one entry, $25/two entry; $30/three entries. Artwork not to exceed 36” wide. A 20% commission will apply to all works sold. All media accepted. Work must be ready for hanging/installation. Entries (with identification labels) and payment to be delivered on Jan 25, 26, or 27, from 12 – 4pm to Highwire Gallery at 2040 Frankford Ave, Phila, PA 19125. The Best of Show Award will receive a month-long exhibit in the gallery’s annex space.

via Danielle Charette – Metropolis Collective is preparing for a show at Hole in the Wall Gallery in March, asking for artists to submit work. Artwork must be created by PA artists, and be 16×20 or smaller in size, framed and ready to hand. To enter submit a photo of your piece . If selected, artists are responsible for transporting and installing the work themselves, as well as covering shipping costs if need be, and completing a contract/inventory sheet. The deadline is February 23; to enter or ask any additional questions, email info@metropoliscollective.com.

Multi-disciplinary coworking space and education center 3rd Ward, who are getting ready to launch their Philadelphia location soon, are seeking an influx of teachers. If you’re interested in teaching workshops on, drop them a line about your area of expertise and pitch a workshop idea. And Brooklynites can benefit from this as well: they are also hiring for their new work/trade program as well as educators and staff members too.

Tyler painting professor Dona Nelson is part of a three-person show at Callicoon Fine Arts, opening with a reception on Sunday, January 13 from 6:00 – 8:00p. The exhibition runs January 13 – February 17, 2013.

Recent Pew fellow Sarah Gamble has work included in Henri Michaux: Selected Works & Group Show: Paintings and Drawings, a retrospective at Edward Thorp Gallery. The show opens tonight and runs through March 2, 2013. This particular show displays a selection of seldom-seen works by Michaux from the late 1940’s to the early 80’s.

Sheldon Bonovitz, who we’ve interviewed for a podcast with his wife Jill, is part of an upcoming panel discussion about outsider art at Galerie St. Etienne.  The Bonovitzes, who own the premier outsider art collection of Philadelphia, are speaking at STORY LINES: Tracing the Narrative of “Outsider” Art, running through March 30. A reception and panel discussion honoring Bonovitz and fellow collectors Mickey Cartin, Selig Sacks, and Siri von Reis takes place on Wednesday, January 30 from 6 to 8 PM.
