The British Museum and the Penn Museum are co-captaining a $1.28 million digital collaboration, supported by the Leon Levy Foundation, to resurrect the archaeology of the ancient kingdom of Ur. Originally unearthed by Sir Leonard Woolley’s excavations on behalf of both museums from 1922–1934, this is one of archaeology’s most thrilling finds, and the exhibition is bound to stun.

Philadelphia artist Virgil Marti‘s first foray into public sculpture, Five Standards (Dazzle), has arrived at Five Crescent Drive at The Navy Yard. Commissioned for the new office of GlaxoSmithKline by the company and the developer Liberty Property/Synterra LP, and managed by the City of Philadelphia Mural Arts Program, this may be yet another reason to trek down to the Navy Yard and be – yes – dazzled.

Ink has been spilled on Pentimenti Gallery this July: they’re listed in Philadelphia Life magazine for being the best in the field in 2013! The magazine’s verdict: “Representing the intersection of art, politics, education and environment, Pentimenti aims to challenge and inspire. Its gallery artists do the same, through contemporary works that include video, photography and sculpture. If you ask us, it’s giving justice to the city’s art scene.” We concur!

Opportunities

A Brazilian opportunity for our intrepid education seekers: Escola São Paulo is launching its third educational program (PIESP) for artists and curators developing research, and projects in the visual arts. They’ll select up to 16 artists and curators for their August 2013-June 2014 program, based around a weekly critical seminar, individual and group presentations, lectures and meetings with notable Brazilian and international artists, critics and curators. Ana Paula Cohen and Adriano Pedrosa serve as interlocutors for the first and second semesters, respectively. The program runs August 20, 2013–June 2014 (Tuesdays and Thursdays), and the selection process is based on portfolios and interviews. The deadline to apply is July 30, 2013; there’s a 750 BRL (about $333 USD) tuition fee, made in 9 monthly payments, and grants for the tuition fee are available for a number of the participants, taking the portfolio in consideration. A site-specific installation of Continua by Katie Murken.

Katie Murken’s installation Continua is on a roll; it’s been going around the country and now arrives at Grounds for Sculpture this Saturday, July 27 with a reception from 2pm to 4pm. The exhibition is second in GFS’ new Greenlight series, highlighting the work of accomplished early career artists. That will net you a mere $5 ticket, discounted from the $12 without pre-registration.

Steven Baris‘ work can be seen this summer in Doppler at Parallel Art Space, Brooklyn, NY. It opened July 13 and runs through August 18.
