News

It’s not every year you get to celebrate the same milestone birthday as your favorite neighborhood institution, but this year the privilege falls to the Artblog and the Green Line Cafe . Both of us turn ten this year! We’re teaming up with Green Line for a show-up-and-show event, Unfiltered, opening Oct. 19, and, as you’d expect, we need visual artists to celebrate with us. That day, bring your work to The Green Line on Locust, and see it on the wall! Overflow pieces go into a flatfile on site that visitors can access. Check back here about what to bring and show. Hope to see you there!

Opportunities

If you’re in panic mode over the bike rack design contest co-sponsored by the Office of Arts, Culture and the Creative
Economy and the Bicycle Coalition, here’s some good news: the updated RFP announces that deadline has been extended to September 30. To reiterate, the total budget for each bike rack is $5,000 for small racks and $15,000 for large racks (including fabrication and installation costs). This competition is open to all artists and designers, and although there’s a list of select sites and bike rack sizes to keep in mind, the organizers are also open to designs that could potentially work anywhere in Center City Philadelphia.

Frank Hyder is one of the exhibitors at the celebration of MICA’s (Maryland Institute College of Art) Then / Now, a retrospective of 160 years’ worth of undergraduate program alumni. Two simultaneous exhibitions are part of this show, with one at Ethan Cohen Fine Arts in Chelsea, New York City from Sept. 12 – Oct. 12 (opening Sept. 12 from 6-8 pm), and the other at the Kunsthalle Beacon (KuBe) in Beacon, NY from Sept. 15 – Nov. 12 (opening Sept. 15, 1-5 pm).  That means Hyder has pieces in both venues, including three 30 ft. inflatable sculptures, a site-specific grouping from his Frontier Series and a brand new carved wood painting made specially for the occasion.

2 from Diane Burko – 1. Our soon-to-be Arctic explorer was asked by Carter Ratliffe, who writes, among other places for the Brooklyn Rail, what her definition of art was.  2. There are only a few more days to go until Diane and fellow artist Richard Ryan begin their great Arctic adventure. They leave next Tuesday evening, bound for Longyearbyen in the Arctic Circle, on a trip including such intrepid locales as Ny-Alesund (the most northern permanent research station in the Arctic), the Lofoten islands and the Norwegian Polar Institute in Tromso. There, they plan on working with glaciologist Jack Kohler, taking helicopter flights over the glaciers and seeing some unthinkably wondrous things. Luckily for us, Diane is blogging the whole journey, begun already on her website.

Bohyun Yoon is participating in the Fall Exhibitions at Anderson Gallery in Virginia Commonwealth University, so please stop by, if you are in the area. The opening reception is tonight, September 6, 5-7pm; the exhibition runs September 6 – December 8. There’s also a gallery talk October 30 at 5:30pm.
