Opportunities
Vox Populi is accepting applications for membership through September 16, 2013. With a solo exhibition every 15 months, participation in group and traveling exhibitions, a hand in all aspects of the gallery’s administration and programming and the chance to curate shows, membership is open to any artist, performer, curator, or writer living in the Philadelphia area, but restricted to those without commercial gallery representation and who are not current students. They’re open to applications from people who do not consider themselves visual artists, as well, so include an explanation in your application of how you might participate. There is a one-time initiation fee of $100.00 for new members; monthly dues are $55.00. Members are required to staff the gallery 4 hours each month and attend monthly meetings. Visit VP’s SlideRoom page to learn more and apply. If you do so, there is a $10 fee for SlideRoom maintenance.
The Clark Hulings Fund for Burgeoning Visual Artists is seeking early-stage professionals. They’re particularly interested in professional painters, sculptors and artists working on paper who employ traditional media, not including photography, film or video; have had their work published and/or exhibited professionally; have been hired or commissioned; and have received opportunities to exhibit their work. To apply, you must have: a fiscal sponsor; an artist statement; a request for support; a detailed proposal and images if available; examples of previous work; resume/CV; and, if necessary, supporting materials (letter of intent from a gallery, commission statement, referrals, references, etc.). Submissions are reviewed by five rotating panelists – a director of the Fund, either Mary or Elizabeth Hulings, and four members of the visual art community (i.e., artists, critics, curators, gallerists, publishers, scholars, private collectors, etc.). The Fund’s first award is planned for November 2013. Beginning in 2014, two awards of up to $5,000 are scheduled per year, one in each category (1-painting, drawing and works on paper, and 2-sculpture). Individuals who receive an award are not eligible to apply again for five years. To find out additional details, visit the Clark Hulings Fund site.
Update from PhilaMOCA – Last week’s call for artists has been revised. PhilaMOCA is now seeking submissions for their October exhibition of bizarre, spooky art to celebrate Halloween. All two-dimensional mediums are welcome, as long as there are no hazardous materials; alas, they are not accepting videos, sculptures or installations. Please send your digital files or photos of submissions to curator Jay Bilinsky at curation@philamoca.org. Links are preferred for six or more entries. Remember, not all submissions are going to be accepted. There is a $20 participation fee per selected piece of artwork, and 100% of the proceeds from sold artwork go to the artist. The deadline for submissions is October 1, 2013. You can drop off accepted art to PhilaMOCA, located at 531 N. 12th Street on Wednesday, October 2 between noon and 6 PM, with additional drop-off times available by prior arrangement. Work must be ready to hang and prepared for installation. For safety purposes, all 2-D should preferably be framed. Only in-person drop-offs will be accepted, no mail-ins!
