2 from the ICA – 1. Institute of Contemporary Art Chief Preparator Paul Swenbeck is mounting several shows of his own, at “Pervasive Clay” at Penn’s Charles Addams Gallery and— in collaboration with artist and wife Joy Feasley — “A Hatchet to Kill Old Ugly” at the Fabric Workshop and Museum. Pervasive Clay runs through October 28; the Fabric Workshop show until January 2015. In November his next curatorial project Clarke’s Third Law opens at Space 1026. 2. If you are a by-the-numbers type, your next side project has arrived. Students at Penn, under the collaborative instruction of Professor Kenneth Goldsmith and Liz Park, Whitney-Lauder Curatorial Fellow, have created  an owner’s manual to a build-it-yourself version of Jason Rhoades’s great The Creation Myth (1998). Complete with an inventory of objects in the sculpture, instructive illustrations, and prose and poetry to go along with the structure, this work is an original, evocative companion to the ongoing exhibitions and programming about the late, celebrated Rhoades.

Not that the original was terribly substantial, but Hyperallergic’s takedown of David Byrne’s complaint about the state of contemporary art came swiftly and brutally. Ric Kasini Kadour implores the musician-and-artist – who is as complicit in the system as anybody else, including us normals – “Let me tell you about the art that makes me angry, makes me cry, makes me feel like there is still hope for this world, and then let’s go to Provincetown or Harrisburg or Taos or Seattle and see it.” Glorious.

Better late than never: earlier this month, Leeway rolled out its August 2014 Art and Change grantees! 31 women and trans* artists were awarded by a panel consisting of writer A. Opportunities

Based out of Atlanta, the inaugural BURNAWAY Emerging Art Writers Mentorship Program promises six-month programs for ten writers (per six-month cycle, 2 cycles per year), with participating writers working with visiting and Atlanta-based critics and writers each month. The first cycle’s participating mentors for the first cycle (January – June 2015) include: Gregory Volk (Art in America, VCU), Chuck Reese (The Bitter Southerner), Erin Dziedzic (The Kemper Museum, Artcore Journal), Eva Diaz (Pratt Institute), Noah Simblist (Glasstire, Art21), and Stephanie Cash (BURNAWAY). Participants come out of the sessions with a writing portfolio, including published works, by the end of the program. The application deadline is on November 21; get all the necessary details for applying at their website.

via e-flux – The Neighborhood Time Exchange: West Philadelphia Artist Residency (Time Exchange) puts artists at the heart of a community we all know and have a vested interest in serving. With residencies based out of newly renovated storefront space at 4017 Lancaster Avenue, embedded artists provide an hour of volunteer effort and service back to the community for every hour spent working in their studios on their own projects. Celia Reisman is part of Directors Choice: Seven Women Artists, a show at Rochester, VT’s Big Town Gallery. The show is up until Nov 22, 2014.

Writing Lessons, a group exhibition of works by members of Grizzly Grizzly (and friends) opened at Butter Projects, Royal Oak, MI earlier this month and runs until October 31.

INK Miami Art Fair is returning in December to the Suites of Dorchester, just two blocks from the Miami Beach Convention Center, This year’s bill includes Tandem Press, with new prints by Mickalene Thomas and Alison Saar; Segura Arts Studio with Carrie Mae Weems and Faith Ringgold; a Fluxus exhibition with prints and multiples by Nam June Paik, and, among the exhibitors, Dolan Maxwell, Philadelphia.
