Big news in Washington, DC – First woman to head Library of Congress is African American.
Dr. Carla D. Hayden, longtime CEO of the Enoch Pratt Free Library system in Baltimore, will be sworn in as the 14th Librarian of Congress by Chief Justice of the United States John G. Roberts, Jr. in a ceremony at noon Wednesday, Sept. 14. The event is by invitation only; however, it will be live-streamed on the Library’s YouTube channel (www.youtube.com/libraryofcongress).
Background:
Carla Hayden, who has led the Baltimore library system since 1993, will be the first woman and the first African American to lead the Library of Congress since its establishment in 1800. The Library serves as the de facto national library of the United States and is open to anyone over the age of 16 who obtains a reader card. It is a resource for the world, collecting books, manuscripts, films, sound recordings, photos and other research materials in 470 languages, with many materials available in digital form. It is also the home of the U.S. Copyright Office, the Congressional Research Service and the National Library for the Blind and Physically Handicapped. The Librarian of Congress also names the nation’s Poet Laureate. More information is available at at the Library of Congress website.

Perhaps you saw his installation in 2015-2016 at the Philadelphia International airport, Terminal E — “Suspended in Time?” Friend of Artblog, Ron Klein, uses found materials, both biological and industrial, to create mesmerizing bursts of matter that look both cosmic and a little comical. We love his work! Ron has a solo exhibition at Howard Scott Gallery, 529 W 20th St. September 8 – October 8, 2016. The show is called X Rays and the opening reception is Thursday, Sept. 8, 6PM – 8PM. HAYES, a video, performance, and installation artist, has recently become an Associate Professor in the Department of Fine Arts. Her partner and frequent collaborator O’HARRA is a writer, director, and performer in theatre, and will be working as a Senior Lecturer in Penn’s Theatre Arts Program. This conversation will be an amazing opportunity for students, Penn community members, and Philadelphians at large to get to know these two Penn artists and their interdisciplinary and always collaborative work. FJORD Gallery is please to announce an open call for the 2016 Juried Exhibition curated by FJORD’s artist members. We invite you to submit a single PDF of your work, image list (CV, and short statement optional) tofjord.submissions@gmail.com for an opportunity to be featured in the exhibition.
Submission Criteria:
The submission fee is $20.00 for 4 entries, and $25.00 for 6 entries. You will receive a confirmation email from Paypal once you have submitted your payment. Please include the confirmation number in the body of your submission email.PDF Instructions:
Attach a single PDF document with 4‐6 images, image list (inclusion of a short artist statement and CV is optional.) One detail image per three‐dimensional entry will be accepted without additional fee. We will not consider submissions that do not meet the submission or Paypal guidelines.Image List:
Include artist information (name and contact info) and corresponding artwork information (title, date, medium, dimensions, presentation requirement: for example, needs pedestal, outlet, headphones, monitor, performance space, etc.) Video work should be submitted via a link on the image list to an online viewer such as Youtube or Vimeo. Due to the number of submissions anticipated, only the first five minutes of video submissions will be reviewed. An artist statement is not required but may help us to better understand your work.The 2016 Juried Exhibition will run from November 3rd-December 1st with an opening reception held at FJORD’s brand new space on November 3rd at 6pm.
