Frances Beaver on world building and being Frances all the time

Imani Roach visits local artist Frances Beaver at her Fishtown studio to chat about her recent video project, Sex of the Earth, and her evolving relationship to narrative and performance.

You may have seen Frances Beaver’s newest video, Sex of the Earth, while it was on view earlier this spring at Practice gallery. If so, you probably have a sense of her talent for weaving unexpected materials and diverse cultural influences together to create closely-observed worlds which run parallel to but do not intersect our own. Earlier this month, I caught up with Frances at her studio, where we talked about her love of storytelling, the predictive power of satirical news programs and her roots in Philly’s DIY music scene. When does satire become a form of fortune telling? View Sex of the Earth online and then listen to find out. Imani interviewed Frances on May 17th, 2018; the podcast is 54 minutes long.
