We’ve just learned that Philadelphia Exhibitions Initiative (PEI) has announced the eight Philadelphia institutions receiving 2005 grants for exhibitions and exhibit planning. Grant monies total $824,460 this year. The ever-generous PEI-a visual arts program funded by the Pew Charitable Trusts and administered by the University of the Arts-has now invested close to $7 million on Philadelphia exhibitions and planning. The 2005 Exhibitions Grant recipients are the Fabric Workshop and Museum, $200,000 for a project with Ed Ruscha as artist-in-residence; Goldie Paley Gallery, Moore College of Art & Design, $197,200 for a project with Brazilian artist Artur Barrio; Institute of Contemporary Art, $200,000 for the Architecture & Design Series project; and the Print Center, $150,000 for newly commissioned works by Ann Hamilton, Vera Lutter and Abelardo Morell. The 2005 Planning Grant recipients are Eastern State Penitentiary, $20,000 for MacArthur “genius” artist Liza Lou to explore a site-specific installation; Philadelphia Print Collaborative, $20,000 for “Philagrafika,” an international invitational print festival; Preservation Alliance for Greater Philadelphia, $20,000 for “Sounding Site: Revisiting Historic Sites through Sound and Light Installation”; and the Village of Arts and Humanities, $17,250 for the multimedia exhibition “Telling Our Stories” about neighborhood elders.
