Vollis Simpson Park receives ArtPlace grant
We told you back in September that Live Arts Festival and Philly Fringe received grants from ArtPlace, well here is another great use of the money from that organization.
Vollis Simpson Park in North Carolina was named as a grant recipient to create a park around the large-scale whirligig sculptures of local 92-year-old artist Vollis Simpson. The art park will not only draw visitors but will anchor a new Industrial Artisan District, with everything from furniture restorers to glassmakers. You may have seen one of Simpson’s whirligigs outside the American Visionary Art Museum in Baltimore.
Institute for the Animated Gif
There is a new home for all of those kitschy animated gif images from the 90s until present day… and where else but Tumblr? Institute for the Animated Gif tells visitors “altho founded in 1996, [it] has remained a private collection… UNTIL NOW :)” Good to know. Free gifs for all!
Transforming Dilworth Plaza discussion
Imagine Dilworth Plaza. Now imagine how it could be with some lush green space and a fun water feature. Interested? Attend tonight’s panel discussion about the future of Dilworth Plaza — Friday, October 21 6 PM. This should be an interesting discussion considering the OCCUPY PHILLY campers who would like to stay in Dilworth indefinitely. The landscape architecture group OLIN will be there as well as members of the Office of Arts, Culture and the Creative Economy. The meeting takes place in City Hall Room 653.
