When we talked to artist Rob Matthews, who migrated north to Philadelphia more than a decade ago, he spoke to us about human folly, his grad school rebellion and his ruthless approach to unsold art. One of his upcoming shows is at the National Portrait Gallery in November. It’s a six-artist exhibit Portraiture Now: Drawing on the Edge. In a little over a decade since he moved to Philadelphia from the South, Matthews’ drawings have become a mainstay of Philadelphia art, collected by Philadelphia’s art museums and represented by Gallery Joe in Philadelphia and by Daniel Cooney Fine Art in New York.
Below is a sample from our interview. The entire episode will run Monday, July 23.
