Bruce Pollock goes West
Bruce Pollock is coming up soon (Sept. 13) at the Santa Monica Museum of Art in Project Room 2: Bruce Pollock: Circling West. It is the Fleisher-Ollman Gallery artist’s first solo museum exhibit and his West Coast debut, and if you ask me, it’s about time that this impressive artist–whose past honors and awards include a Pollock-Krasner Foundation Grant–was recognized with a solo museum exhibit. But the venue seems like a marriage made in heaven. Pollocks hyperspace fractal circles and spirals seem one with the L.A. culture! Ommmm. The exhibit will include paintings and a site-specific wall drawing.

Frank Hyder, whose shamanistic paintings are invariably great to look at, has a couple of exhibits–one in Chelsea and one in Spanish Harlem!
New Rhythm at the Walter Wickiser Gallery in Chelsea features new work on transparent mylar. The imagery is fish, and the materials include gold and silver leaf as well as paint.
September 2nd through 27th, 2008, with an artist reception Thursday September 4th from 6 to 8 PM.
At the National Museum of Catholic Art and History in Spanish Harlem, Hyder has New World, an installation with “luminous vessels” hanging in the gallery against backdrops of sea and “paradise lost” on the walls–his take on an imagined voyage to the New World.

Rah Crawford goes for the gold
I never can predict where Rah Crawford will land next. He has created a bunch of portraits for Olympians with personal blogs on Spikes–a sort of build-up toward the games. Alas, the words–Rah’s trademark–are lost in the small scale. But I’m cheering him on. Rah Rah. Go USA.
