via Becky Huff Hunter – The Institute of Contemporary Art’s new, David Zwirner-supported exhibition Jason Rhoades: Four Roads is in stride, continuing until December 29, 2013. This is the first major museum survey of Rhoades’s work, built around four installations to be navigated by four interpretive paths or roads. More information about the exhibition is available here.
2 new artworld appointments – 1. Garth Johnson is the new Curator of Artistic Programs for the Clay Studio, where he’ll be helming the exhibitions, Artist Residency Programs and a new strategic plan starting in January 2014. His accomplishments are manifold –in addition to his tenure as a board member at-large for the National Council on Education for the Ceramic Arts (NCECA), Johnson runs popular alternative-craft site ExtremeCraft.com, is the author of a book on recycled craft, has exhibited nationally and internationally, and given a TEDx talk on creative reuse. 2. Cynthia Nourse Thompson has been appointed Director of the MFAs in Book Arts/Printmaking and Studio Arts at University of the Arts, effective June 1 2014. Coming to us from the University of Arkansas where she is currently Curator and Director of Exhibitions as well as an Associate Professor, Thompson brings years of experience in printmaking, book arts and letterpress printing to her upcoming position. Congratulations to both!
Al-Bustan Seeds of Culture’s first concert of the season is tomorrow, Oct 5 at 8 PM at the Trinity Center for Urban Life. With music and poetry inspired by Federico Garcia Lorca, the show features the exceptional talents of vocalist Sonia M’Barek and poet Nathalie Handal.

The Jack Kent Cooke Foundation‘s Graduate Arts Award is open to applicants with exceptional academic records and unmet financial need, with senior standing, a bachelor’s degree from the last five years or plans to begin their first full-time graduate degree program in the performing arts, visual arts, or creative writing in the fall of 2014. Awards can provide as much as $50,000 annually. In 2014, the foundation is choosing up to twenty recipients in a two-phase application process. The first phase is open to college seniors and recent college graduates, who may apply directly to the foundation. If a student is invited to continue in the second phase, he or she must be nominated by the foundation’s faculty representative at their institution. Each college or university may nominate up to two students to be considered for the award, and must make all nominations by February 27, 2014. Visit the foundation’s Web site for complete program information and application procedures. The deadline is November 26, 2013 for Phase One applications.
Brush up on your intaglio skills with Rebecca Gilbert on Saturday, October 26. She’ll be teaching a class called Intaglio Printing with Plaster and Glue, a day-long workshop at The Printmaking Center of New Jersey, held from 10am – 4pm

Bill Scott’s exhibition In Arcadia is now open at Hollis Taggart Galleries, running until November 2, 2013. Accompanied by a catalogue with an essay by Robert Mattison, Marshall R. Metzger Professor of Art History at Lafayette College, this marks Scott’s fifth show with Hollis Taggart.
Tracing Experience, a show featuring Josette Urso, opens October 7 at the Macy Gallery, Teachers College, Columbia University as part of the third annual Thinking Through Drawing Conference. It’s up until November 1, 2013, and there’s a reception Saturday, October 26 from 5-7pm. Josette also has a show called Multiple Choice at Dowling College’s Anthony Giordano Gallery in Oakdale, NY that opened September 4 and continues until October 12, 2103.
Artforum has a review of Judith Schaechter’s spring exhibit at Claire Oliver in their October issue, which is just out. The content won’t be online until December, but in the meantime there’s a teaser available.
