News

ForceField is a familiar presence for us, but might not be for anyone others who will be around June 21-22. This vivid two-day art/music/performance experience, boasting 45 multi-disciplinary artists from 7 states, and brought to Philly by Tim Eads and Joe Bartram, is bound to dazzle. They have an amazing lineup of musicians to soundtrack the event – King Britt, Alex Burkat, Hiro Kone, Telequanta, Ryan Todd, Ben Warfield, Mary Lattimore and Jeff Zeigler. With plant-generated visuals designed by NoCarrier and Enso, there’s also the chance to learn what a plantable album is. We can’t say for sure. It is, however, guaranteed to be insanely cool. If you are planning to attend, a $25 donation gives you a free ticket, cool poster, and one of the aforementioned plantable albums from Data Garden.

via Erin Boyle – A major change rolls around on June 1, when Erin Boyle steps down from her temporary post as Director of MFA Programs, Book Arts, Printmaking and Studio Art, passing the position to Cynthia Nourse Thompson. Welcome and congrats, Cynthia!

The emergent Internet struggle of the week: e-flux and DeviantArt versus the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN). Since its 2012 launch of the “New gTLD Program,” which allows any company or organization to apply for one or more generic top-level domains, e-flux and DeviantArt have been torchbearers for the art world’s use of .art. That all changed recently when eight other, purely commercial, entities and individuals applied for the same generic top-level domain, opening the door for a commercial exploitation of the string. e-flux, with a network of over 100,000 art institutions and professional artists, curators, and practitioners, combined with DeviantArt’s 30 million-plus registered members, are taking up the cause of .ART gTLD by planning to establish standards for the use of the .ART address; they’re asking the ICANN Board to recognize the .ART gTLD’s as solely a domain for trusted, proven organizations in the arts. With all this entails, you can learn more about how you can help at e-flux, and by exploring the #savedotart hashtag on social media.

Kelly Kozma’s solo exhibition “Chattersphere” has opened at Paradigm Gallery + Studio! If you didn’t make the opening, you can stop by to take in her hand embroidered works on paper as well as some larger scale paintings. the gallery is open on Saturdays from 12 – 6pm and by appointment 7 days a week.

via Phil Jackson – Phil Jackson is having an industrious month so far: in addition to a big show of his most recent work coming up at Marginal Utility (June 6), he’s been printmaking, frame making, website redesigning, and producing tons of highly entertaining video projects.
