Exciting news! The work has begun on Gravers Lane Gallery’s expansion into the 8403 Germantown Ave. exhibition space. The Grand Opening is scheduled for February 2015, and features Botswana and the Art of the Kalahari, a special first exhibition celebrating Black History Month. Curated by Cindy Friedman, the show benefits the Botswana UPENN Partnership.
2 from the Philadelphia Museum of Art – 1. Habemus papam! Next year, that is – the Philadelphia Museum of Art has just been announced as a host of next year’s scheduled Papal Visit and World Meeting of Families 2015. Pope Francis is going to be at the center of a giant roster of activities and events, including family programs, tours of the devotional masterpieces in the museum’s collections, and a celebratory day of free admission. 2. Gail Harrity, President and Chief Operating Officer of the Philadelphia Museum of Art, has been selected as a 2014 Women of Distinction award recipient! Today is her acceptance ceremony, held from 5:00 p.m. to 8:30 p.m at Vie.
Caroline Furr is one of the many talented contributors to Book Paper Scissors, a Free Library event happening November 22, 2014 from 10:00 am – 4:00 pm at the Parkway Central Branch. Every year, Book Paper Scissors gets together to celebrate book arts, printmaking, and paper crafts, featuring a variety of artists as well as free educational workshops. Vox Populi is once again accepting applications for solo exhibitions, by individual or collective artists, with a deadline of December 15, 2014 for exhibitions that take place in February or March 2014.Upon acceptance, the work must be ready and available to exhibit in either February or March, 2015. Vox’s artist members select and group guest artists. The application fee is $20, which helps cover SlideRoom fees. Notification for selected artists goes out on December 22, 2014. Alternative Topographies is on the lookout for entries, with a deadline of December 5. A time-based, juried media exhibition focused on exploring the issues of space, the RFP is open to all moving image media: video, film, and animation, and especially works with original sound elements. Submissions must be under 10 minutes in length and in quicktime video format; the submission fee is $25 for up to 3 entries.

Michelle Post, whose Mucky Mucks project was shown here in its infancy, is now finished! “The Oligarchs”, affectionally known at the “Mucky Mucks,” are finished in paint and set to have the concrete poured at Grounds for Sculpture starting in December. “The Oligarchs” is part of the GFS Spring opening in May of 2015.
This year’s recipient of the Vera List Center Prize for Art and Politics is Syrian film collective and self-styled “emergency cinema” Abounaddara. An anonymous collective that emerged at the onset of the Syrian Civil War, Abounaddara—Arabic for “man with glasses”—posts one video on Vimeo every week about individual Syrians on all sides of the conflict. Last year saw Theaster Gates win the inaugural Vera List Prize, having brought his installation A Way of Working to The New School in 2013.
Yevgeniy Fiks’ new show “The Lenin Museum” is opening tomorrow at The James Gallery at CUNY’s Graduate Center from 6–8pm.
Jenny Lam’s winter project, creating her own children’s books, is the next course of action for one of the most up-and-at-them people we know. With ideas based on her own life and the lives of many of her friends at the ready, this endeavor harks back to a creative childhood and promises some wonderful results.
