Philadelphia is always a place of many distinct and often contradictory feelings, and as the masses of politicians, reporters, delegates, protesters, lobbyists, promoters, and enthusiasts drain out of the city here are a few of the emotional highs and lows from last week:

One reporter from the Tampa Bay Times got the full treatment. Of course cheesesteaks are disgusting. Just look at one…or eat one…or smell one… or be near one. There real purpose is to help us locals identify key populations of people to avoid: tourists, people who are inebriated, sports fans, etc.

Even if this story is 15% true that fact that we wanted this to happen is 100% amazing. Did Sean Hannity disrespect that most holiest of Philadelphia congregations — the Wawa hoagie queue? Did he really try to buy a cheesesteak from a computer? Did he not know that Philadelphians are willing and able to boo anything, anyone, anywhere? Beloved sports stars: BOOOOO The pope: BOOOOO Santa: BOOOO Sean Hannity? BOOOOO (duh)

This essay does a good job of describing our political conventions as dream factories inflating a fantasy America that has never really existed for most citizens outside of our imaginations. But since Barack Obama eight years ago (re)connected our political body with our emotional/moral body, it has been increasingly difficult to differentiate the two spheres. It could be said that Obama’s heart-felt oratory that makes you believe in both hope and poetry in some way paved the way for a Donald Trump platform that comes exclusively from his gut and is delivered in all caps with engorged passion. For better or worse, we are voting with our feelings and imaginations. The question now is, how do you feel? What do you want to imagine?
