Check out three of the summer’s hottest shows at two of West Philly’s most important art venues, the Arthur Ross Gallery and the Institute for Contemporary Art!
Willie Cole at the Arthur Ross Gallery
We’ll start at the Arthur Ross Gallery where we’ll take in Willie Cole’s ambitious solo show, On Site. Featuring the artist’s signature found-object sculpture, Cole transforms common domestic objects like irons, shoes, and bottles into powerful ensembles evoking ancient gods and contemporary consumer culture. There’s even a giant chandelier made of recycled plastic water bottles!
Two shows at the ICA
We’ll pause for a caffeine and sugar break at Federal Donuts, then we’ll visit the ICA, which is hosting two summer shows–Ginny Casey & Jessi Reaves and Myths of the Marble. We’ll start upstairs with the collaborative show of painting by Ginny Casey and sculpture by Jessi Reaves whose creepy, slightly surreal takes on domestic objects are a must-see. Downstairs, we’ll take in Myths of the Marble, a huge international group show that plays with ideas of virtual reality (get ready to try on one of those virtual reality headsets!).
We’ll have the chance to chat with staff and museum guides, and share our thoughts about what we see.
