Big plans are taking shape at The Clay Studio.
Founded in 1974 by five Philadelphia artists, this international center for ceramics has been a vital creative hub where emerging artists shape their careers and young minds shape their imaginations, where skilled crafters shape communities of makers and where handmade works of art quite literally take shape.
The Clay Studio has evolved into one of the premier centers for the promotion of ceramic arts in the United States and the world. Despite all the accolades, The Clay Studio remains a welcoming family where people from all walks of life can “clay together.” This singular non-profit organization provides valuable studio space, relatable educational programs, and exceptional exhibitions that inspire everyone, from novice to expert.
For over four decades, The Clay Studio has provided arts education for 40,000 Philadelphia students and youth through its Claymobile program and has shaped the careers of more than 150 resident artists, serving as an incubator for diverse and talented makers. Literally hundreds of thousands of hand-crafted works have been conceived, created, and fired at the Studio.
Looking ahead to expanding its impact for new audiences and generations, The Clay Studio is shaping plans for a bigger, broader reach. They are shaping a movement for the greater Philadelphia community and the world, made possible by the significant support of generous community leaders. Motivated by a challenge grant from the Windgate Charitable Foundation, The Clay Studio and its supporters fulfilled the $1 million challenge in December 2017. “This impactful gift enables us to advance our ambitious plans, and to deepen our vision of uniting creativity and community,” says the Studio’s president, Christopher Taylor.
The Clay Studio celebrates this milestone but recognizes there remains tremendous work to be done that requires the support and participation of its regional and national communities. The Clay Studio is shaping a movement that will change lives forever.
