Second, a chance to hear four Black Guggenheim photography fellows -- Donald E. Atelier Art Gallery is excited to announce the exhibition House and Travels: Paintings by Emily Davidson, Dona Nelson, and Zachary Rawe. House and Travels is distinctly not curated, rather, it is a collaborative selection of paintings by the three artists involved. By refusing a thematic or clear premise, the exhibition serves as an experiment in seeing how three unique painterly practices negotiate commonality and difference, while maintaining separate trajectories.
For her part, Davidson will display paintings which continue her investment in rendering images where subject and space get lost in one another. Often the paintings hold mixtures of abstraction and representation, where energetic movements swirl color and form into images that are both lively and curiously disrupted…

Nelson will present two large-scale paintings that exemplify the variety of her oeuvre, including one that highlights a particularly unique element of her practice: “Mountain Road” is a large-scale rendition of Nelson’s mother’s painting from the 1950’s. Nelson will be displaying her mother’s original painting alongside her own, playfully engaging the history of painters learning from the practice of making master copies. Additionally, the titular work in the exhibition, Nelson’s House and Travels, will also be on view. This freestanding work is exemplary of Nelson’s hallmark, both sides exposed in order to showcase amongst other traits, how a decision on one side can shape an aesthetic on the other.
Rawe will include two separate sets of paintings. One set, titled A Dialogue on Growth (with R. Morton and J. Halberstam), includes gray, text-based paintings that riff on a 1977 drawing by Ree Morton titled “Manipulations of the Organic (From Louis Sullivan #1)”… The series explores an almost sign-making potentiality within painting…

2023 Wind Challenge Exhibition Series – DEADLINE: May 1, 2022
Established in 1978, the Wind Challenge is an annual juried competition committed to featuring the work of exceptional artists living in the region. Since its inception, the series has supported the careers of hundreds of emerging artists and introduced their work to thousands of visitors. Artists living within a 450-mile radius of Philadelphia are welcome to apply. More information and to submit here. For this series, six selected artists will be featured in two Wind Challenge Exhibitions—each featuring three artists—to be hosted at Fleisher in 2023. Jurors for the 2023 series are Victoria Ahmadizadeh Melendez and Yolanda Wisher.
