Herb and Dorothy at the Ritz

In case you missed it during the recent CineFest (Philly Film Festival), the acclaimed documentary Herb and Dorothy will be at the Ritz at the Bourse for one week starting this Friday, June 19.  The film is about Herb and Dorothy Vogel, the husband and wife collectors who were a postal clerk (Herb) and a reference librarian (Dorothy) who amassed one of the most comprehensive contemporary art collections in the world.  The trailer for the movie is below. The movie won an Audience Favorite award at CineFest.

The Vogels have been giving away their massive collection with the help and guidance of the National Gallery, NEA and others.  Their 50 Works for 50 States program puts works into the collections of one museum per state and in Pennsylvania, PAFA is the happy recipient of works from the Vogels by artists Robert Barry, Lynda Benglis, Jim Hodges, Nam June Paik, Richard Tuttle.

“With the exception of the collection formed by their friend, artist Sol LeWitt, no other known private collection of similar work in Europe or America rivals the range, complexity, quality of the art the Vogels acquired,” said the press material from PAFA.

Anyway, the trailer looks good. I have heard of the Vogels for years and if the movie lives up to the trailer it should be lots of fun.
