Mierle Laderman Ukeles is a visionary whose work over the past 45 years has enlarged both the form and content of the art of our time. While revered among artists interested in feminism, performance art, social practice, and institutional critique, and a significant influence on two younger generations of artists, many of whom may not recognize her name, her work has not achieved the broad renown it deserves until now.

Between Text and Textile – Ann Hamilton’s “habitus”

Hamilton always invokes more than one sense with her work; here it is the sight of the swirling fabric, the oddly musical sound of the pulley mechanisms, and the touch of the pulleys–which visitors are encouraged to operate–as well as the physical sense of wind on the body from both the swirling fabric and the river breezes.

Listening to Dr. Barnes – “Room 21” at the Barnes Foundation

For audience members, the experience of “Room 21” felt like the musical equivalent to taking in the heterogeneous groups of artworks hung on the walls of the museum, creating juxtapositions that resonate in unexpected ways and prompting reflection on the connections and tensions among different cultural and artistic traditions.

Lee Tusman on “Room 21” Performance at the Barnes

Lee Tusman has curated up a storm at many places in Philadelphia (e.g., Little Berlin) and elsewhere. Now, he’s got a really great-sounding one-night-only performance–Room 21–he’s organized in collaboration with Ars Nova and DJ Jace Clayton and the Prometheus Chamber Orchestra. I talked with Lee about the musical performance, which will take place on Saturday, September 9 at the Barnes Foundation, and asked why it’s at the Barnes and is Room 21 one of the Barnes gallery rooms. Artblog Presents Creative Africa – Akinbode Akinbiyi

Akinbode Akinbiyi was born in England of Nigerian parents. The Berlin-based artist is a self-taught street photographer who calls himself a “wanderer.” He loves mega-cities and in fact he told us he wandered around our own mega-city, Philadelphia, and took photos when he was here. Artblog spoke with Akinbiyi on May 13, 2016, at the Philadelphia Museum of Art’s Perelman Building, home of five Creative Africa exhibitions. You can see Akinbiyi’s beautiful black and white photos at the PMA Perelman building now until Sept. 25, 2016.
