In big news today, we can all go out and VOTE and bring to an end the national nightmare of the 2016 election. I collect campaign buttons and other types of buttons. I forget where I got these two (below images) but whoever made them thank you! They messages echo my thinking right now. Vote, and let’s get started on the healing.

JOG turns Ten – Congratulations! James Oliver Gallery (JOG) is celebrating their 10th Anniversary! Their celebratory exhibit, JOG10 (up to Nov. 19) features gallery favorites Thomas Paul Raggio, John Wind, Cheryl Harper, Nadine Rovner, Steven Mogck, Dennis Daly, Steven Earl Weber and Mathew Davis, as well as new folks they will be working with: Emily White, and Ira Upin.
Others they will be working with in future are papercuts artist Rosa Leff, featured in Evan Laudenslager’s write-up, Michael Grimaldi, and Kevin Bourgois.

Announcing – 2016 New Art Writing Challenge finalists and top prize winners!

We’re not handing out gold stars or laurel wreaths in this Challenge, but we do believe in the value of prizes to reward excellence. Prizes for excellence encourage and support writers in the community and by extension, the arts in Philadelphia. Publication of the writers’ works brings new voices to the public realm, spreads the arts to a wider audience and can be a springboard to writing opportunities for winners.

Friend of Artblog and teacher of our Artist and Social Responsibility Project class, Theresa Rose has a wonderful community project she’s curated. 9th Street Stock Exchange, with a title punning on the financial markets, is a collaboration (not competition) between merchants in the Italian Market. Will Owen Talks Travel, Sound Art, Collaboration, and the Chinatown Bus

Will Owen is an artist working primarily with design, interactive media, sound…and FOOD! He’s a Little Berlin member who I met in 2014 for a show he curated at that space. He’s a bit of a nomad, living between Philadelphia and New York, where he is an artist in residence at Flux Factory in Queens. So it’s kind of no surprise that some of his curating involves transit, especially subways (he did an audio piece for the Copenhagen subway system) and buses (he’s curated exhibitions on the Chinatown buses between New York, Philadelphia, Boston and Baltimore).

Congratulations-Leeway grantees, Art Ability artists, and Sarah Archer! “We Are Watching” is doing that, Kutztown hosts Phila painters’ show, Plus Opportunities

One of the best-kept secrets of Philadelphia-area art is the annual Art Ability Exhibit, a juried show with more than $7000 in prizes! A project of Bryn Mawr Rehab Hospital, this year is the 21st iteration of the exhibition. (An aside, I was a juror in 2015, along with Anthony Vega and Deirdre Murphy. It was such a great experience to see all the work by the artists!).

Elaine Byrne – Classic material with a contemporary context

Irish artist Elaine Byrne makes work that uses Dante, James Joyce and other heady source material for her works with political and social commentary on contemporary issues. In one case she is calling out an Irish bank scandal, using Dante’s Purgatorio and a pilgrimage location in Ireland called St. Patrick’s Purgatory; in another she’s raising issues about anti-Semitism in the context of Joyce’s Cyclops section of Ulysses. The videos are captivating, and give so very much to chew over. Elaine’s Irish accent is part of the treat of this 38-minutes long podcast.

Lipton sisters bring Karen Finley to town for artistic candidate-bashing show, Fourth Lantern Slide Show at Wagner, Penn Arts Innovation Program announced, Matthew Christopher’s book launch at Gershman Y, Plus Opportunities!

Via Amy Lipton, Independent Curator (formerly at Abington Art Center)…Amy and her sister, Jane Lipton, are bringing Performance Art Warrior Karen Finley, to Venice Island Performing Arts Center, Manyunk, for a one-night-only performance, “Unicorn Gratitude Mystery, SUNDAY, NOVEMBER 6, 7:30 PM. The piece is one woman’s inflamed look at the 2016 Presidential election and candidates.
