Reflections on Art, Commodities, and Work

Recently, I had a meeting with a director of an artist-run space in Philadelphia. At many points in our discussion we touched on the issue of selling artwork. This led to reflections on the state of the art market in Philadelphia and the strong anti-commercial ethos of sections of the Philadelphia DIY art community. It strikes me that this opposition is a good place to start, not least because it forms the elementary premise on which a number of conversations that I have had with people from the arts community here in Philadelphia about the state of art in the city and the rest of the United States are based.

José Ortiz-Pagán talks of etching on steel and curating a booth at “Unlisted”

José Ortiz-Pagán grew up in a small town in Southern Puerto Rico where he was a skater and a fledgling grafitti artist. Fast forward a few and now, he’s been in Philadelphia for seven years. The Tyler MFA in printmaking and sculpture talks about being an activist and about the political roots of his current work at the new Latino art commercial gallery, RACSO.

Lee Tusman on “Room 21” Performance at the Barnes

Lee Tusman has curated up a storm at many places in Philadelphia (e.g., Little Berlin) and elsewhere. Now, he’s got a really great-sounding one-night-only performance–Room 21–he’s organized in collaboration with Ars Nova and DJ Jace Clayton and the Prometheus Chamber Orchestra. I talked with Lee about the musical performance, which will take place on Saturday, September 9 at the Barnes Foundation, and asked why it’s at the Barnes and is Room 21 one of the Barnes gallery rooms. Narrating Contemporary Alienation – Jim Grilli’s “Gallery Copy” at Little Berlin

Overall, Gilli’s performance articulated a complexity that was welcome and it did so within a project space that promises more interesting interventions. What was distinctive about the performance was its staging of the artist’s thought process in a moment of its development.

Congratulations Librarian of Congress, Carla D. Hayden! Welcome Sharon Hayes, Brooke O’Harra, Plus Ron Klein in NYC and Opportunity

Carla Hayden, who has led the Baltimore library system since 1993, will be the first woman and the first African American to lead the Library of Congress since its establishment in 1800. The Library serves as the de facto national library of the United States and is open to anyone over the age of 16 who obtains a reader card.
