Commonweal announced its representation of five artists; Locks Gallery now represents Dona Nelson; Roberto Lugo is leaving Tyler teaching to concentrate on his art and life. Congratulations are in order this week for artists Jacob Chris Hammes and the other 2024 RAIR Artists in Residence; to Roberto Lugo and Main Line Art Center for an NEA-funded exhibit at MLAC, and of course, to all the (re)FOCUS artists in the many exhibitions around town, including the Art in City Hall exhibition in collaboration with Women’s Caucus for the Arts.

New Ruth Arts Foundation awards grants to five Philadelphia arts groups, Tom Devaney’s ‘Bicentennial City’ on WHYY-TV, Plus a video on gun violence panel, and help Philadelphia’s search for the right Harriet Tubman memorial

It’s summer! But there’s still news, even in the art world. A new foundation, The Ruth Foundation for the Arts (Ruth Arts), today awarded $1.25 to 78 nonprofit arts organizations nominated for the grants. We congratulate the 5 local groups chosen for the new grants: Ballet X, Blackstar Projects, Taller Puertorriqueño, Twelve Gates and The Clay Studio. In other news, two videos we recommend for this hot weekend, and a call from the city for citizen participation in shaping the choice for the new public art Harriet Tubman statue.

Black activist and icon Angela Davis saluted with documentary exhibit at Zimmerli Art Museum at Rutgers University

“Angela Davis – Seize the Time” brings together 220 objects, many from from the archive of Oakland’s Lisbet Tellefsen. On view are papers from her short, troubled employment at UCLA in 1969, and material from her arrest and trial for part in a fatal shootout (she was found not-guilty). During her incarceration pre-trial, Davis inspired many artists, who created work to support her case, including Elizabeth Catlett and Faith Ringgold. Some of those works are included in the Zimmerli show, along with art by contemporary artists Roberto Lugo, Coco Fusco and others, whose works are in dialog with Davis and her struggles. The traveling show is on view at Zimmerli through June 15, 2022, and moves to the Oakland Museum of California in the Fall of 2022.
